First Touch of Morning Sun

The 33,000 acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park lies in a 22 mile long north-south valley which keeps the east side of the valley in dark shadows for an hour past sunrise. By the time the sun finally rises high enough for fingers of light to touch the treetops, the sun has become gloriously brilliant At that moment a great contrast between light and darkness exists. This interesting effect is most obvious in autumn when the trees are adorned in their glowing fall foliage. This startling October photograph was taken just seconds after the sun began to illuminate the valley’s bronze, crimson, and golden forest.
